New WHO clinical and policy guidelines on violence against women

August 1, 2013

A new publication by the World Health Organization (WHO) provides evidence-based guidance to health-care providers on how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. The guidelines also address policy makers by encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to violence against women within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines aim to provide standards for national guidelines, covering the following topics:

  • identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence,
  • clinical care for sexual assault,
  • training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women,
  • policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services,
  • mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence.
